When Chelsea and her young son escaped a dangerous situation, they weren’t just searching for a place to stay; they were searching for safety, stability, and a chance to start over. Their journey is a powerful reminder that when organizations, neighbors, and compassionate people come together, lives can be transformed.
When Chelsea first arrived at Rogue Retreat in the spring of 2025, she was simply looking for somewhere safe. After escaping a dangerous domestic violence situation with her young son, she had left behind her home, her job, and the stability she once knew.
“I couldn’t advocate for myself,” Chelsea recalled. “I couldn’t make phone calls or do all the paperwork. I was really out of it.”
Before arriving at Rogue Retreat, Chelsea found support through Phoenix Counseling Center, where she received counseling, peer support, and advocacy. She also found safety at Community Works’ Dunn House before being connected to Rogue Retreat. Together, these organizations formed a continuum of care that helped carry her through one of the hardest moments of her life.
“It felt like I had this whole team of people making sure I was okay.”
Chelsea and her son first entered Rogue Retreat’s Family Shelter Program before later transitioning into one of the organization’s lease apartments. Although she hoped it would only be temporary, her case manager, Cody, helped her realize that what she needed most wasn’t another move. She needed stability. With a safe place to call home, Chelsea could focus on repairing her credit, establishing positive rental history, finding employment, and navigating the legal process surrounding her divorce and custody of her son.
“The staff protected us,” Chelsea said. “They checked in on us, made sure nobody strange was coming around, and made me feel really safe and comfortable.”
Through the encouragement of her case manager, the support of community partners, and the stability she found at Rogue Retreat, Chelsea discovered the power of a community that believes in people and walks alongside them every step of the way.
One of Chelsea’s favorite memories came when staff transformed the apartment parking lot into a birthday celebration for her son, complete with inflatables, water games, snow cones, and activities for the neighborhood children.
“It was really special,” she said. “My son got to have his friends over, and it meant so much.”
Today, Chelsea’s apartment feels like home. Friendly neighbors, small acts of kindness, and the encouragement of those around her have replaced uncertainty with hope.
Chelsea’s story is a reminder that lasting change happens when communities come together. Counseling, peer support, emergency shelter, housing, case management, supportive neighbors, and compassionate staff each played a role in helping her rebuild her life. For Chelsea, finding a safe place to live was only the beginning. She found something even greater: a community that believed in her and gave her the opportunity to build a future filled with hope and new beginnings.
